BR Blue Peak 45060 Near Corfe Castle 09/05/2015
Swanage Railway, following a very popular appearance at the 2009 Swanage Railway Diesel Gala. Entering service in May
1961, the loco was a member of the fleet that replaced steam traction on the Midland Main Line out of London St Pancras.
Nicknamed the 'Peaks', the class followed on from the class 44
and was later developed into the class 45/1 and class 46. The
four-axle bogies fitted to the locos were necessary to spread the weight of one of British Rail's heaviest types.
The progressive introduction of lntercity 125 sets on the route in the 1980s saw the locomotive withdrawn in 1985, with preservation
securing the loco in 1987. Eleven class 45s survive into preservation, in varying states of repair.
The vast majority of the fleet was scrapped at Vic Berry's of Leicester or MC Metals at Springburn, Glasgow.
