A very special visit allowed me to take a look inside the very busy and modern Hitachi Doncaster Carr IET Depot, which turned out to be so new that it wasn’t registered on any SatNav yet! This exclusive video shows an insight into what goes on at the depot, with brand new Hitachi Class 800/801/802 units being tested and prepared for delivery. At the moment, the depot is used as a commissioning depot where Hitachi can apply final touches (Vinyl application, interior preparation and testing) to the Class 800’s before delivery to Great Western Railway, with the trains originating from the plant at Newton Aycliffe. Eventually the depot will serve as a day to day maintenance depot for Hitachi for the East Coast Mainline (VTEC, TPE and HT).
