It's defiantly worth purchasing tickets in advance where possible because, a ticket the same journey brought on the day will cost in excess of £15!
If you're taking this train between Gatwick Airport and London, you can use oyster/contactless cards. However, be sure to tap out on the correct gate at London Victoria as on gate is marked for Gatwick Express and one for the regular trains. Don't make the same mistake I made a couple of years ago by tapping out on the Gatwick Express gate because you'll be charged the Gatwick Express fare (19.80) as opposed to the regular oyster/contactless fare (£830 off-peak.)
