Description
A great Saturday spent with @southwalestrainspotting5090 chasing the always immaculate Southern Merchant Navy rebuilt Bulleid Pacific 35028 ‘Clan Line’ as it worked the 1Z28 Railway Touring Company ‘Atlantic Coast Express’ railtour following the old Southern withered arm route from London Waterloo - Exeter St Davids.

The locomotive looked right at home on its old stomping ground, and the chase for the ACE was on as we began by seeing the tour arrive at Yeovil Junction for a short watering stop, before a short jaunt up to the A37 Dorchester Road bridge to get the locomotive accelerating away from Yeovil.

We then headed on to Honiton, where ‘Clan Line’ had drawn quite a crowd, with people out to see the steam engine through and we took the opportunity to get ahead again while she was stopped, moving on to Cranbrook, where she blasted past with a great doppler whistle!

We then find the tour at Exeter St Davids, where the empty coaching stock drew forward into Exeter Riverside Yard, and the locomotive and support coach were uncoupled so 'Clan Line' could be watered and serviced, before the final sequences show the rake dragged back in behind WCRC 47812, before ‘Clan Line’ raises steam and makes an impressive departure into the Sunset, heading the 1Z29 up the Great Western Mainline to Bristol Temple Meads, and then retracing more familiar Southern metals to Salisbury and London Waterloo bringing to an end a great day of action! | 12.10.2024
