Description
While the West Somerset Railway enjoyed Maybach Music from the Hymek today https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qiuKxJNKMsw over in the Mendips another preservation milestone was reached, when GWR 2-8-0T 4247 triumphantly returned to steam and performed her first light test runs around Cranmore shed following a 3 year overhaul today!

4247 arrived from Bodmin in January 2022 to be overhauled by the ESR as a contract job, following an agreement between the owners, 4247 Ltd and The Dartmouth Steam Railway, which will see the loco on hire to the DSR for a 20 year period. Visitors have been able to view the overhaul progress in or around The Engine Shed at Cranmore, and today the hard work and efforts of the team was rewarded as a fire was lit and this afternoon, and after the team fine tuned some niggles, inevitable at this early stage post overhaul, the locomotive proudly moved under its own power! She looked magnificent in British Railways black, an appropriate livery which would have been worn by 4247 in 1948 in the first year of British Railways ownership, and she even engaged in a short whistle off with GWR 4555 which was working todays Mendip Belle services. There was also a good opportunity to see the newly installed Cranmore ground frame by the signal box.

The team have done a brilliant job, and she will certainly impress at the ESR's forthcoming Steam Gala when she will star alongside 4555 and 4110, and haul her first passenger trains between 31st May - 1st June, a real credit to everyone involved! | 17.05.2025
