THE SHOW MUST GO ON! Dean Forest DIESEL GALA OVERCOMES CHALLENGES & DELIVERS GREAT EVENT | 15.09.24
The event was plagued with setbacks in the lead up, firstly with South Devon Railway based Class 25 No. 25262 suffering an electrical issue during preparations for its road move and having to cancel itâs booked gala visit.
Class 09 shunter 09106 also cancelled in the days leading up to the event and with the reduced locomotive numbers, the unique rake of TTAs from the National Wagon Preservation Group and Queen Mary Brake Van freights were taken out of the timetable, but the revisions didnât end there!
Rail Operations Group provided x2 Class 37s, Europhoenix pair 37884 âCepheusâ & 37510 âOrionâ, but the latter had been suffering starter motor
issues resulting in limited use later on Saturday afternoon, and when we caught up with the pair on Sunday morning, it was clear the persisting issue was causing more problems, resulting in âOrionâ being declared a failure and quietly shunted out to the sidings adjacent to the mainline connection for the remainder of the day, to keep the run round loops clear at Lydney.
Despite all of this however, the gala was still a cracking event, with the Swindon And Cricklade Railways Class 73 E6003 âSir Herbert Walkerâ in action alongside 37884 âCepheusâ, and the 73 acting as translator loco for the 37, the pair providing plenty of thrash action echoing through the Forest of Dean! We also had Class 08 shunter 08769 in action on a local diagram, and towards the end of the day, a nice unexpected surprise as the lines resident Class 14 D9521 was started up which we see from the passing train!
