LMS 5XP Jubilees + 6880 BETTON GRANGE in action at the SEVERN VALLEY SRPING STEAM GALA! | 19.04.2025
Owing to the unfortunate disruption caused by the landslip at Sterns, Trains could only work between Kidderminster - Hampton Loade, so it was going to be interesting to see how they did it, but in true Severn Valley fashion, they came up trumps!
Three Guest Engines starred which were:
- LMS Jubilee No 45596 âBahamasâ, with thanks to the Bahamas Locomotive Society
- LMS Jubilee No 45699 âGalateaâ (Currently running as 45627 âSierra Leoneâ), with thanks to West Coast Railways.
- GWR No 6880 âBetton Grangeâ, with thanks to the 6880 Betton Grange (Society) Ltd
These ran alongside home fleet locos:
- GWR 7802 Bradley Manor, appearing in 1965-condition, with no nameplates, âDannyâs Bullâ style white painted door darts, door hinges, and buffers.
- GWR 7812 Erlestoke Manor, last appearance before a holiday on the West Somerset Railway.
- BR Standard 75069
- GWR 1450 (Bridgnorth Station in steam Saturday + Sunday only)
- GWR 7714 (Bridgnorth Station in steam Friday + Monday only)
Weather started damp but improved throughout the day as we enjoy a ride on the 08.55am off Kidderminster behind LMS 45596 âBahamasâ, before returning behind the engine as far as Arley, then taking a local shuttle behind the newly overhauled GWR 7802 âBradley Manorâ to Highly.
We then enjoy more Jubilee haulage, this time behind âGalateaâ, allowing us to compare the single and double chimney examples of 5XP's in action, before working our way back to Bewdley and Kidderminster during the early afternoon.
Owing to the landslip, Bridgnorth was effectively âcut offâ from the main timetable of the Spring Steam Gala, but this certainly didnât mean there wasnât anything happening!
After a good few hours riding between Kidderminster and Hampton Load, we took a short drive up to Bridgnorth, where GWR 14XX 1450 was in steam, offering rides paired with the recently repainted DMU power car in and out of the station. 1450 had also had been lined out and had its British Railways lion emblems applied to the tanks, looking great working shuttles during the afternoon , before finishing at 4pm and returning to Bridgnorth Shed. 4930 'Hagley Hall' was also on static display so certainly still worth a visit for those who were able to get there.
We return to Kidderminster in the evening for a final sequence with the Grange arriving, and âBahamasâ taking the 18.05pm out to Hampton Loade, where both gala stars lined up for some impromptu photo opportunities, bringing to a close a cracking day at the Valley!
