Railway 200 SUPER SATURDAY! | FIVE preserved railways visited in one day | 27.09.2025
We begin at Ropley on the Watercress line where steam locomotives were being prepared for today's services in conjunction with the Wallace and Gromit event. 34059 ‘Sir Archibald Sinclair’ has now safely arrived from the Bluebell Railway ahead of the lines forthcoming Autumn Steam Gala, and was on shed alongside other locomotives this morning.
We leave the Mid Hants after a great week in Hampshire, and head over to the Eastleigh Lakeside Miniature Railway, who were holding their ‘Big Little Steam Rally’ Autumn Gala with lots of narrow gauge locomotives in steam. Engines from the nearby Bankside Miniature Steam Railway at Brambridge Park Garden Centre had even come across to take part in this event and there was a great atmosphere with road steam vehicles and lots of miniature locomotives in action throughout the morning.
Continuing home, the third stop on today's trip was at the Avon Valley Railway who were hosting a special Railway 200 gala this weekend to commemorate 200 years since the opening of the Stockton and Darlington Railway. GWR 6695 had arrived from the West Somerset Railway and following successful repairs to her foundation ring, was back in traffic operating trains with the resident Class 31 as well as Fry’s Chocolate Sentinel and WD diesel shunter ‘Grumpy’, which were also in action and great to catch up with @southwalestrainspotting5090 here.
Our forth railway was a quick stop at the Midsomer Norton Somerset Dorset Joint Railway site, though sadly not running today, everything was in place for their Railway 200 open day tomorrow with the DMU and diesel shunters set to operate intensive timetable on Sunday to mark Railway 200. Also interestingly 'Kilmersdon' from the Mid Hants will be visiting this line later in the year.
The fifth and final preserved railway was the East Somerset Railway at Cranmore. While not holding a Specific Railway 200 event as such, they were in steam with the ‘Mendip Belle’ cream tea special being operated with GWR 4555 and we also have a look around the engine sheds and the David Shepherd Museum, with 4555 heading back to shed rounding off a fantastic day heading round various railway preserved railways to mark this historic Railway 200 bicentenary of the Stockton and Darlington and birth of the modern railway!
