Full Power on the Lickey! | Trains CLIMBING Britain’s STEEPEST Main Line | Mid-Morning Action |
Join me at Vigo Bridge, located near the summit of the famous Lickey Incline above Bromsgrove, for a relaxing mid-morning and afternoon of railway action.
The Lickey Incline is the steepest sustained main-line railway incline in Great Britain, climbing at a relentless gradient of 1 in 37.7 (2.65%) for two miles between Barnt Green and Bromsgrove on the busy Cross Country Route. Opened in 1840 as part of the Birmingham & Gloucester Railway, the incline has challenged locomotives for over 180 years.
Historically, many trains required the assistance of powerful banking locomotives to conquer the climb, creating some unforgettable sights and sounds. Today, while modern traction handles most services with ease, the heaviest freight trains can still require banking assistance, keeping this historic railway tradition alive.
Filmed from Vigo Bridge near the top of the bank, this video captures a variety of passenger and freight services working hard over one of Britain’s most iconic stretches of railway. Listen to the locomotives as they tackle the demanding gradient and enjoy the ever-changing traffic throughout the session.
