Description
Highlights from some mainline movements during the second week of January in the South West.

Monday 12th saw a rare daylight move of the GWR sleeper stock, top and tailed by Class 57s 57602 'Restormel Castle' and 57604 ā€˜Pendennis Castle’, after the previous night's up service was operated by an IET. We see the train operating under 5Z50 passing Norton Fitzwarren filmed by Phil Izzard and Bridgwater.

Tuesday 13th saw the highly anticipated appearance of 37512 in its newly applied retro railfreight grey large logo livery working a daylight Class 175 drag from Ely Papworth Sidings - Penzance T & R.S.M.D. with Ex Transport for Wales/ Arriva Trains Wales 175010, barrier vehicles 6393 and 6344 and 37501 ā€˜Teesside Steelmaster’ acting as tail gunner. Enthusiasts were out in force this move, and my thanks to Phil Izzard, Steven Beale and Steamboy Adventures https://www.youtube.com/@SteamboyAdventures for their contributions to this video. We see the consist pass Bridgwater, before Phil catches it at Bathpool, Steven gets it charging through Taunton and Keegan films it through Nynehead climbing up Wellington bank.

On Wednesday 14th, having dropped off the 175 ready to start a new future with GWR, the 37s headed back through the region working the 5M57 Penzance T & R.S.M.D. - Derby RTC past Huntworth on the outskirts of Bridgwater.

But there were x2 other Class 37s in the region this week working on the mainline as 37099 ā€˜Merl Evans 1947-2016’ and 37175 were out on overnight test train duties with the Ultrasonic Test Unit and in less than favourable conditions on Thursday 15th, a daylight refuelling move gave an opportunity to see the pair run through Exeter St David’s. Also spotted was GBRF 69006 ā€˜Pathfinder Railtours’ still basing out of Fairwater yard and continuing its route learning trips between there and Exeter.
