Description
After witnessing the impressive ‘200 Wheels on the Cob’ spectacle on Sunday during the Ffestiniog & Welsh Highland Steam Gala https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EeaMTJDHaSc&t=6049s here we take a memorable trip on the Welsh Highland Railway, between Porthmadog and Caernarfon.

Our service was in the capable hands of the mighty Beyer Garratt NGG16 No.87, articulated to allow her to negotiate some of the tight curves and perfect for dealing with the climbs along the railway, she worked hard and dealt well with a loaded train of 10 passenger cars.

Leaving Porthmadog at 10.05am, this stunning trip along the railway climbs the scenic landscape, winding through Snowdonia National Park and running alongside mountains before passing the downward service at Rhyd Ddu. We continue up to Dinas and onto Caernarfon, with impressive views of the Castle and Harbour, and just enough time to have a wonder around the seafront, before the return journey at 14.15 once again taking in the spectacular Welsh landscape as the Garratt works hard over the 25 mile journey!
