York (Holgate Bridge) on 18th + 19th May 2011
I visited the grand historic city of York in May 2011. Just South of the magnificent arched roofs of the Station is Holgate Bridge, carrying the very busy A59 road. This was a rather popular spot in the past for enthusiasts to watch the trains pass by, but when this was filmed was beginning to become a little inaccessible. The Class 91 and Class 82 DVT's were the main traction, speeding up and down the East Coast to and from London King's Cross, York, Newcastle, Edinburgh and North to Aberdeen, were the Class 43 HST wearing "East Coast" livery. BR Class 180 Diesel Hydraulic Multiple Units, known as "Adelante" units. were also seen as well as the Class 185 DMU's which had taken over on services from/to Newcastle, Leeds, Manchester and Liverpool. Grand Central HST's are seen arriving and departing the Station and also several Class 158's in "Northern" livery. As for the freight scene, a lot of traffic mainly goes round the Station avoider in the hands, witnessed on the 2 days I had my camera on, Class 66 Locomotives in either EWS or GBRf Livery and also captured on film on the second day was DB Schenker's all Blue liveried Class 60 (60074 "Teen Spirit") hauling an oil train. A special train working was UKRT's The "Cumbrian Mountain Express" from London King's Cross to York with (EWS) Locomotive 67029 "Royal Diamond" and then onto Carlisle via the S + C to Carlisle hauled by Steam Locomotive "Duke of Gloucester" number 71000 from York to Leeds and Carlisle, later returning from Carlisle via Hexham with 67029 again in charge back to London via the ECML. In addition to all of this activity a Class 70 (70011) passes under the bridge with a Freightliner train. Superb action on this visit and more to follow from the actual Station itself later.
