Steam & Diesel Action at Toddington | GWR 6880 Betton Grange, GWR 3850 & Class 20 No. 20137 | GWSR |
Join me at Toddington Station on the Gloucestershire Warwickshire Railway for a day of heritage railway action, featuring a fantastic mix of steam and diesel traction.
In this video you’ll see three very different locomotives working passenger services along the line:
🚂 GWR 6800 Class No. 6880 Betton Grange – the remarkable new-build Grange Class locomotive. Constructed between 1998 and 2024 by the 6800 Society, 6880 became the first Grange to steam in preservation after more than 25 years of work. Built using a combination of original Great Western Railway components and newly manufactured parts, it brings back a class that disappeared completely following the withdrawal of the last Grange in 1965.
🚂 GWR 3850 – a powerful 1942-built ‘2884’ Class 2-8-0 heavy freight locomotive. Returning to steam in August 2024 after a comprehensive overhaul at Toddington, 3850 now operates in its authentic wartime black GWR livery. Designed for hauling heavy freight, the class became renowned for its strength and reliability across the Great Western Railway network.
🚆 BR Class 20 No. 20137 (D8137) – built by English Electric in 1966, this distinctive diesel-electric locomotive has been based on the Gloucestershire Warwickshire Railway since 1994. Wearing classic BR green, 20137 remains a regular performer on both passenger and engineering duties, representing one of Britain’s most recognisable first-generation diesel classes.
Throughout the video you’ll see arrivals, departures and passing trains as these locomotives work services between Cheltenham Racecourse, Toddington and Broadway, showcasing the variety of traction currently operating on one of Britain’s finest heritage railways.
