Pure Diesel-Hydraulic Power: Class 35 Number D7076 Shakes the Valley with a Thundering Departure
British Railways Class 42 "Warship" B-B diesel-hydraulic locomotive number 832 (originally D832) was constructed in 1961 at British Railways' Swindon Works. Weighing 78 tonnes, it is powered by two Bristol Siddeley Maybach MD650 12-cylinder turbocharged engines generating a combined 2,270 brake horsepower through Voith hydraulic transmissions, with a top speed of 90 mph. It proudly carries the name "Onslaught" in matching heritage BR Blue livery with full yellow front ends. It represents the ultimate level of diesel-hydraulic preservation rarity, being one of only two surviving Class 42 locomotives left in the entire world, both of which remain in full operational working order.
The leading locomotive, the pristine Class 35 "Hymek" No. D7076, is seen here in 8K 16:9 widescreen staging a thunderous departure as it leaves Irwell Vale Station. Hauling a beautiful rake of heritage British Railways Mark 1 passenger coaches in a mixed colour scheme of classic BR blue and grey alongside traditional maroon, the service operates in a top-and-tail formation with the iconic Class 42 "Warship" No. 832 "Onslaught" bringing up the rear of the train. The powerful hydraulic engines are captured roaring away from the station, unleashing a magnificent display of pure hydraulic power and leaving heavy plumes of diesel smoke in their wake as the train thunders deep into the distance. This spectacular scene was captured during the East Lancashire Railway Summer Diesel Gala on Sunday 05/07/2026 at 12:16.
