Double-Headed Hydraulic Thunder! Class 42 Warship No. 832 & Class 35 Hymek No. D7076 Blast Bury
British Railways Class 35 "Hymek" Type 3 B-B diesel-hydraulic locomotive number D7076 was constructed in 1962 by Beyer, Peacock & Co. at Gorton, Manchester. Weighing 74 tonnes, this versatile locomotive is powered by a single Bristol Siddeley Maybach MD870 16-cylinder turbocharged diesel engine, producing 1,700 brake horsepower through a Stone-Maybach Mekydro hydraulic transmission. Geared for a maximum operational top speed of 90 mph, it stands as an incredibly rare heritage asset, representing one of only four surviving Class 35 locomotives left in existence worldwide, and one of just three examples currently in full working order. Looking absolutely immaculate, it is beautifully turned out in its matching heritage corporate BR Blue livery with full yellow front ends.
The locomotives are seen here in 8K 16:9 widescreen double-heading and staging a thunderous departure as they blast out of Bury Bolton Street Station and roar straight through Bolton Street Tunnel. Heading Northbound towards Rawtenstall, this powerful diesel-hydraulic combination forms a spectacular sight as it works the absolute last passenger service of the day, bringing a memorable close to the weekend's events. Together, they capably haul a beautiful rake of heritage British Railways Mark 1 passenger coaches featuring a distinctive mix of colours, composed mainly of maroon alongside classic BR blue and grey liveries. This magnificent and loud scene was captured during the grand finale of the East Lancashire Railway Summer Diesel Gala on Sunday 05/07/2026 at 16:48.
