Description
After a weekend heading out to steam events at both the Pontypool & Blaenavon Railway https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_Sc1enEVQt0&t=4563s and the Swanage Railway https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=70SzIbAZnXk&t=5125s today concluded the weekend with a diesel theme down at the Dean Forest Railway, who were holding their annual Diesel Gala!

This two day event had seen a good crowd on Saturday, with Deltic 55009 ‘Alycidon’ which arrived last week https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XmFPoZcDm2g&t=5s pulling in enthusiasts along with visiting 50021 ‘Rodney’ and the lines resident shunters 08769 and 09106 (wearing its new Railfreight grey livery) all in action during the event, and even with poor weather forecast for Sunday, plenty of enthusiasts still turned out.

I was greeted with unique and slightly surreal experience upon arrival with the opportunity to travel in the brake van right behind visiting Deltic 55009 ‘Alycidon’ at no additional cost to the standard ticket price. The Eastern region racehorse was running on one engine only during the event, more than powerful enough for the railway and on a notably colder start to the morning, the distinctive Napier thrash erupted and echoed out around the Forest of Dean as ‘Alycidon’ made her presence known and hitched a ride on the train hauled by visiting 50021 ‘Rodney’ to Lydney.

@southwalestrainspotting5090 and I ride down before the Deltic leads the charge and is put through her paces carrying the brake van and load 3 + 50021 ‘Rodney’ out of Lydney to Parkend. We then return on the 50 and continue catching the moves through the day.

Sadly by the early afternoon some pretty atrocious rain and bad weather had set in, but this did little to dampen the enjoyment and didn't deter from a cracking day at the railway, rounding off a brilliant weekend of railway gala activities! | 14.09.2025
