6880 'Betton Grange' + Buckets WD152 'Rennes' and 68067 steal the show at the Swanage Steam Gala!

A great day at the Swanage Railway for their Spring Steam Gala today, which this year featured GWR Grange Class 6880 ‘Betton Grange’, visiting courtesy of The 6880 Society and the GWSR, Austerity Tank Engine Number 68067, visiting courtesy of the Roger Hibbert Locomotive Collection and the Great Central Railway and fellow Austerity Tank Engine WD152 'Rennes' fresh from a recent overhaul and starring courtesy of the Dean Forest Railway.

They were all in action alongside the Swanage home fleet, LSWR T3 563, Southern Railway Bulleid Pacifics 34070 ‘Manston’ and 34072 ‘257 Squadron’ and lastly SR ‘U boat’ 31806 +. recent mainline certified 34028 'Eddystone' on shed all delivering a great day of gala action and the railway was able to offer trips beyond Norden past Furzebrook Sidings towards the mainline limit at River Frome, with an intensive timetable of passenger, freight, double headers and top and tailed formations in operation throughout the day, as well as the opportunity to visit the the Purbeck Mining Museum at Norden.

Sadly after a period of recent good weather, today saw pretty overcast conditions with persistent drizzle but it didn’t deter from a great event riding the locomotives through the Isle of Purbeck. | 27.03.2026
