The Buxton Spa Express behind 45407 The Lancashire Fusilier on 14th March 2026
We joined the train at Manchester Victoria and we made our way to Buxton via Bolton, Blackburn, Todmorden, Denton, Stockport and Whaley Bridge.
Thousands were lineside enjoying the spring weather and a chance to watch a steam locomotive in action on the mainline.
Arriving at Buxton was very incredibly busy so we took the chance to see the ECS workings and the locomotive water filling operation.
The journey back to Manchester was via the freight only line via the scenic Ashwood Dale, past the enormous Tunstead Quarry complex and Peak Forest before joining the Hope Valley line at Chinley.
We alighted at Stockport and watched the train leaving towards Manchester in the late afternoon sun.

A rail tour featuring Black 5 locomotive 45407, The Lancashire Fusilier, was recorded as it travelled through parts of Lancashire and Derbyshire. The journey began at Manchester Victoria and included stops at Bolton, Blackburn, Todmorden, Denton, Stockport, and Whaley Bridge before arriving at Buxton. The route also passed through Ashwood Dale, near Tunstead Quarry, and Peak Forest, with the return journey via the Hope Valley line to Stockport.
