Four unforgettable hours at historic York Station on the East Coast Main Line, capturing a constant flow of LNER Azuma's, Trans Pennine Express units, light engines and heavy freight. From high-speed passenger action to atmospheric platform moments steeped in railway history, this session blends modern traction with powerful personal memories โ all filmed between 11:10 and 14:45 on 3rd February 2026.
Welcome back to Trains & Freight Diaries for a superb four-hour trainspotting session at York Station, one of the most important and historic railway locations in the United Kingdom. Filmed between 11:10 and 14:45, this video captures the full rhythm of the modern East Coast Main Line, set against the backdrop of a station that has witnessed nearly two centuries of railway history.
The day began appropriately aboard LNER Azuma 801204, working 1S09, my train from Peterborough to York, gliding into the city that has long been a beating heart of British rail operations. Freight action followed with DB Cargo Class 66 No. 66007 hauling 6M16, complete with unmistakable waste wagons โ a reminder that York still plays its part in vital logistics flows.
Passenger traffic was relentless throughout the session. Highlights included Trans Pennine Express Class 185s such as 185113 on 1P19, 185146 & 185147 on 1P69 and 1P74, and 185121 & 185132 on 1P72. LNER dominance continued with a parade of Azuma's and bi-modes, including 801219 (1Y12), 801227 (1S10), 801213 (1S14), 801225 (1Y14), 800106 (1E13), 801228 (1N06), 801209 (1E14), 801111 & 801104 (1N07) and 801229 on 1Y15, which swept majestically around the curve into Platform 3.
Other notable movements included Grand Central Class 180s โ 180101 on 1A64 and 180104 on 1A65 โ along with Northern units such as 170475 on 2C33 and 158842 on 2R74. Light engine interest came courtesy of Class 69 No. 69006 on 0N71, while LNER test and ECS workings appeared with Class 802 units including 802212 (9E09), 802201 (9E11) and 802202 (9E12).
๐ฐ๏ธ A Personal Moment in Railway History
Standing on Platform 3, exactly where 801229 came to a stop, I was transported back to 1978, aged just 12, when I stood in the same spot and witnessed my first Deltic โ 55003. Back then, York was alive with thunderous Napier engines and later the raw power of HSTs. Today, the atmosphere is calmer, more refined โ efficient and fast โ but undeniably quieter than the roaring era of Deltic`s and Valenta`s.
