TWO FOR ONE DIESEL GALAS! | The Ecclesbourne Valley Railway and Peak Rail Twin Peaks Diesel Galas!

A fantastic day ticking off two long sought after first time visit preserved railways for me, in conjunction with the Twin Peaks Gala.

This event saw two Derbyshire based Railways, The Ecclesbourne Valley Railway and Peak Rail both teaming up to supply a diesel showcase of their home fleet and visiting engines at both lines!

We began at the mainline connected Duffield Station on the Ecclesbourne Valley, where we were treated to diesel action from their resident Class 33 33103 ‘Swordfirsh’, Class 47 D1842 ‘Basil’, and Class 73 73001 all out on the mainline and freight trains between Duffield and Wirksworth, as well as resident shunter D3236 and the diesel railcar climbing the steep summit up to Ravenstor.

There was plenty to see at this railway, but we are on limited time as the free vintage bus service provided with the ticket allowed us access to a second preserved railway in the area, Peak Rail, who were hosting EPR Class 37 37901 ‘Mirrlees Pioneer’ alongside the home fleet of Peak D4 ‘Penyghent’ and a selection of visiting and home fleet of diesel shunters. This railway ran from the delightful Matlock - Rowsley South which again boasted a fine selection of rolling stock around the yard including some long south after Class 50s!

Both events complemented each other brilliantly and the bus timetable allowed enough time to explore both lines for a few hours, a great example of collaboration between two preserved railways which delivered a brilliant Friday, and both lines will certainly be getting a more comprehensive visit in the future when time allows!| 10.04.2026
