Description
Following this mornings trip up the Snowdon Mountain Railway, https://youtu.be/elcpMHIv0_Y this afternoon we headed across the road to explore the second heritage railway in the area, the Llanberis Lake Railway, with a different perspective of the mountains!

This narrow gauge railway lies in the heart of slate country, and Dinorwic Quarry was a key supplier in of slate before its closure in 1969. Today the railway has been repurposed as a tourist attraction, taking passengers on a scenic journey along the lake up to the limit of operations at Penllyn. We enjoy a steam hauled ride behind Hunslet Works No.849/No.2 β€˜Thomas Bach’ so called after the nickname of the locomotives regular Quarry driver.

We stop on the way back to have a look round both Cei Lydian and the main station at Gilfach Ddu, with remnants of the Slate Quarry industry still very prevalent. Another great little narrow gauge railway in Wales, that perfectly compliments it's Snowdon mountain climbing neighbour! | 23.06.2025
