The Big 'O' Grumpy Tour, 20th September 2024
This trip was originally intended to work from Kolín to the Ostrava area and cover many of the freight and minor branches around Ostrava and Opava. Due to an extreme weather event that turned much of Moravia in to a no go zone the week before the trip was to run, an alternative route and destination was planned at very short notice.
The alternative destination became Plzeň via a circuitous route from Kolín. across Prague then mostly following the Vltava river north to Usti nad Labem then on through Most, Chomutov, Cheb and arriving at Planá u Mariánských Lázní mid afternoon for a reasonable break because of a planned engineering block which was due to re-open around 17:45-18:00.
Once the line had re-opened the train left for Plzeň. The section between Planá and Plzeň is reasonably steep and the loco was heard to be working hard. For some unknown reason our train was halted at Plzeň-Jižní Předměstí station which was adjacent my hotel so I bailed!
The locomotive used was 751149, Operated by TRAC Rail - CZ-TRNY. The day before there had been a problem with a thermostat that controlled the radiator air intake shutter on one side and a temporary fix had been applied in the form of wheel chocks jammed in the shutter to keep it open!
