Preserved Railways in the 2010s Bluebell Railway on 9th July 2011
Bluebell Railway on the 9th July 2011
This video is particularly suited for the Steam Enthusiast
Set in the beautiful Sussex countryside is the (At present 11 miles) route, wonderfully preserved section between East Grinstead to the North and Sheffield Park to the South, with intermediate stations at Kingscote and Horsted Keynes, where the line used to branch off and connect with Haywards heath. With their HQ based at Sheffield Park, the railway has some outstanding preserved samples of Steam Locomotives from the Southern Railway and now has several diesel locomotives and even a class 423 4 car VEP EMU. I gave the railway a visit in 2011, feeling I had really not looked at this great stretch of railway, and on the day witnessed a goods train being hauled by steam Locomotive (Tank Engine) "Captain Baxter" (No: 3) an 0-4-0T, built in 1877 for the Dorking Limestone Quarry at Betchworth, withdrawn in 1959. Then I saw SR 473 an 0-6-0T engine, "Birch Grove" of the LBSCR which was built in 1898 and worked until BR condemned her in 1962. Finally there was BR Standard 4MT 80151 a 2-6-4T, which had a very short life with BR from 1957 - 1967. All these locomotives spent their entire lives working quite locally around the Southern Region.
The locations themselves I visited are picturesque and took me back in time to the bygone age of steam operation and therefore I hope the video takes you back to this period with fond memories too. Feel free to comment, good or bad, all comments are read and greatly appreciated, but it is not always possible to answer each individually..
