Sagano Romantic Train, 30th November 2016
The train is formed of five coaches with a locomotive at one end and control car at the other. Four of the coaches have opening windows and one is open to the elements, which was the vehicle I rode in. The locomotive is always at the Saga end of the train. The journey takes about 25 minutes each way. Some travellers walk back along paths or get a boat back from a landing near Kameoka JR station. A bus operates between the Kameoko Tarokko station and the boat landing.
The locomotive working the service at the time was DE10 1104, a five axle diesel hydraulic locomotive manufactured in Emperor Hirohito year 46 [1971] with builders number 2984 according to a cast plate on the cab of the locomotive. The locomotive is part of the fleet of West Japan Railway Company.
The route includes passage through the Hozukyo Ravine near the Hozugawa river. The train consists of five coaches with a diesel locomotive at the Saga end and a control car at the other. One coach offers open access to the elements. Travelers may return via walking paths, boat services from Kameoka JR station, or a connecting bus.
