Description
LMS Stanier Class 5 4-6-0 "Black Five" steam locomotive number 44806 was constructed in July 1944 at Derby Works by the London, Midland and Scottish Railway (LMS) before being renumbered under British Railways following nationalisation. Weighing approximately 126 tonnes in full working order with its tender, this iconic mixed-traffic locomotive features a starting tractive effort of 25,455 lbf. At the cylinders, it generates an estimated 1,500 to 1,600 indicated horsepower (IHP), which translates to roughly 1,000 to 1,200 drawbar horsepower (DBHP) delivered directly to the coupled train. Famously adopted in early preservation by ITV's children's television programme Magpie, the engine later underwent a comprehensive, mainline-standard overhaul at Grosmont financed by owner Peter Best, returning to steam in late 2023. It is beautifully turned out in its heritage corporate BR Lined Black livery, representing a stellar example of Sir William Stanier's highly successful "do-anything, go-anywhere" locomotive design.

In this highly scenic picture, the locomotive is captured in 8K 16:9 widescreen travelling tender first as it runs gracefully alongside the picturesque River Esk through the beautiful Esk Valley. Cruising smoothly along the riverbank on a glorious summer's day, the vintage steam engine guides its passenger service toward its destination. As it enters Whitby Harbour, the train is seen slowing down and gently coming to a halt at the harbour side, pausing just before the final track approach into Whitby Station. This peaceful and idyllic coastal heritage rail sequence was captured on Monday 13/07/2026 at 13:53.
