Barrow Hill Roundhouse - 150+2 Celebration Gala - 27/08/22

Barrow Hill Roundhouse, Britain's only surviving operational roundhouse shed, opens the gates for the site's 150th anniversary, albeit delayed two years due to the coronavirus pandemic, with a wide variety of locomotives and stock on prominent display throughout both the yard and engine shed.

Baby Deltic Project locomotive D5910 takes centre stage on the shed's turntable, surrounded with a number of the sites home fleet engines, including three of the five surviving Midland Railway built locomotives: 1F Tank 41708, currently undergoing overhaul to working condition, in addition to two members of the national collection, Midland Compound 1000 and newly arrived Matthew Kirtley 156 Class 158A, having recently been cosmetically restored at Locomotion in Shildon.

Multiple preserved and mainline operation diesels and electrics were out on display in the yard, including Europhoenix Class 91s 91117 and 91120, 89001 'Avocet' in InterCity livery, and GBRf Class 69 69003 'The Railway Observer', named during the event. Shuttles along the demonstration line were carried out by GWR 1500 Class Pannier 1501 and British Rail 03066, Class 02 D2868 and Class 07 D2996.

Our cameras also took a visit to the Deltic Preservation Society's depot, with D9015 'Tulyar' on display having been repainted into BR Two-Tone Green, with the locomotive soon to return to traffic in the coming months, and the cab of 55008 'The Green Howard', having recently been cosmetically restored both inside and out.
