Didcot Railway Centre - The Impossible Dream - 22/04/19
Saint Class 2999 'Lady of Legend' is the most recent new build steam locomotive, with her only entering service earlier this year. The GWR Saint Class was designed by G.J Churchward in 1902, however no examples of the class survived into preservation, with the last example, 2920 'Saint David' being scrapped in 1953. The Great Western Society took to the challenge of recreating an example of the class, with work beginning on the build in 2004, using 4942 'Maindy Hall' as a basis for the locomotive, which had previously been purchased by the society from Barry Scrapyard in 1974.
6023 'King Edward II' is one of three GWR King Class locomotives, one of the GWR's most powerful steam locos, to survive into preservation, with 6000 'King George V' on static display and 6024 'King Edward I' being a frequent runner in preservation since 1989. Meanwhile, 6023, an unlikely candidate for preservation, left Barry Scrapyard in 1984, following 20 years of being raided for parts and exposure to the elements, only to return to steam in 2011 following major restoration work.
Steam Railmotor 93 is the sole survivor of 99 examples built by the GWR between 1904 and 1908, with many early withdrawals being converted to auto-trailers. No 93 was converted to an auto-trailer in 1935, and was finally withdrawn from service in 1956.The vehicle was not scrapped however, and instead was used as an office in Birmingham. Acquired by the Great Western Society in 1970, she too underwent a major restoration project, with a replacement power bogie being built, so she could finally steam again in 2011.
