LMS Stanier Pacifics await Service | 6233, 46203 & 80098 - PRCLT 'West Shed' - 29/06/24

Whilst visiting Midland Railway Butterely for the launch of LMS Fowler 3F Jinty 14660, our cameras had time to visit the West Shed, home to the Princess Royal Class Locomotive Trust, custodians of LMS Princess Royal Class 46203 'Princess Margaret Rose', Princess Coronation Class 6233 'Duchess of Sutherland' and BR Standard 4MT Tanks 80080 & 80098.

A look around the West Shed workshop shows the on-going progress of both 6233 and 80098, in addition to RSH 0-4-0ST No.7214 'George'. Princess Coronation Class 6233 'Duchess of Sutherland' , the trust's flagship mainline locomotive, is currently undergoing major overhaul, having last steamed in December 2022. With the boiler set to be removed for overhaul, current expectations at this stage are for the locomotive to return to traffic in 2026 at the earliest. BR Standard 4MT Tank 80098 too is under a heavy general overhaul, with her previous boiler certificate expiring in 2009, whilst 80080 is currently away on long-term loan at the Ecclesbourne Valley Railway.

On static display in the museum section of the shed is Princess Royal Class 46203 'Princess Margaret Rose', one of two Princess Classes to survive into preservation. 46203 last ran in April 1996, and with the trust largely focused on 6233, 80080 and 80098 currently, coupled with lack of available funding, there are no plans to return 46203 to operation for the foreseeable future.
