BR Class 201 Hastings DEMU 1001 makes a rare appearance in Derbyshire, with the 7-coach unit running "The Derby Researcher" from Hastings to Derby. The unique narrow bodied unit was built between 1957 and 1958, seeing service on the line between London and Hastings, via Tunbridge Wells. The narrow body of these units was required for the narrow clearances in tunnels along the route. These units were withdrawn in 1986, following a £23 million upgrade of the route, with new EMUs introduced to the line.

In 1989, The Hastings Diesel Group acquired units 1001 and 1013 for preservation, with a mainline set seeing frequent use on railtours, charters and even hire for TOCs in the South East and East Anglia. Currently, a 7-coach set is operable on the mainline, based out of St. Leonards depot.
