Description
The Severn Valley Railway’s 2024 Autumn Diesel Gala saw the debut of the first operational Class 58 in preservation, with Mainline Blue liveried ‘Bone’ 58023 ‘Leicester Depot’ taking centre stage, having arrived at the railway for test running a couple of weeks ahead of the event. 58023 was built in 1984, with a service life of only 15 years, having been withdrawn from traffic in 1999. After spending over a decade and a half in storage at Toton depot, she was purchased for preservation in 2016. Since then, she has spent most of her preservation life at Leicester LIP depot, where she has been restored to working order. The event also marked the first passenger working of a Class 58 for the first time since 2002.

Alongside 58023 was a selection of locomotives from the Severn Valley Railway’s home fleet, including Fifty Fund Class 50s 50007 ‘Hercules’ and 50049 ‘Defiance’, both sporting recent repaints into BR Large Logo livery, following an extended period of both carrying GB Railfreight colours. Alongside home fleet and visiting Class 58 was a GWR HST Castle set, with Class 43 powercars 43094 and 43122, in addition to Class 25s 25262 & D7628 ‘Sybilla’.
