North Yorkshire Moors Railway - Autumn Steam Gala 2024 - 27/09/24

The North Yorkshire Moors Railway's 2024 Autumn Steam Gala event sees the railway welcoming GWR Hall Class 4953 'Pitchford Hall' for the first time, with the locomotive standing in for fellow Western loco Castle Class 4079 'Pendennis Castle'. 4953 was joined alongside rebuilt Bulleid Pacific West Country Class 34028 'Eddystone', which previously visited the railway in 2006. The event also sees 34028's final gala appearance before returning to Herston Works for the process of fitting electrical equipment and air braking system ahead of the Bulleid's forthcoming mainline return. A final visiting locomotive came in the form of USATC S160 2253 'Omaha', which is set to undergo conversation from coal to oil firing at the railway.

Guest locos were also join by the NYMR's operational home fleet, including LNER J27 2392, Lambton Tank No.29 and LMS Black Fives 5428 'Eric Treacy' and 44806, the latter having returned to service earlier in the year, having previously been retired for overhaul at the 2017 Steam Gala. The gala also featured BR Standard 9F 92134 masquerading as scrapped sister 9F 92079, complete with 'Big Bertha' electric headlamp. 92079 was allocated to Bromsgrove Shed for most of her service life, having taken over banking duties on the Lickey Bank from Midland Railway 0-10-0 locomotive 'Big Bertha'.
