Description
Housed in the former GWR Works in Swindon, STEAM Museum tells the story of the Great Western Railway and the history of the many locomotives and stock built at Swindon Works.

The site is home to numerous classes of GWR locomotives on display, including the first of the Castle Class locomotives, 4073 'Caerphilly Castle', which celebrates her 100th anniversary this year, GWR King Class 6000 'King George V' and sole surviving GWR City Class 3717 'City of Truro'; the first steam locomotive to claim a top speed of 100mph in 1904. Though the claim has never been proven, and continues to be debated to this day, the story of her record run certainly aided in ensuring 3717's survival into preservation.

A replica of Broad Gauge locomotive 'North Star' is also displayed in the museum, positioned alongside a figure of Isambard Kingdom Brunel. This exhibit marks the early history of the Great Western Mainline and it's construction, originally built to Brunel's Broad Gauge of 7ft 1&1/4 inches. Another unique exhibit is GWR 4200 Class 4248, which appears in a dismantled state, posing as a locomotive under construction, with the surrounding displays dedicated to the role women played at Swindon Works during WWII, when the predominately male workforce at the time were sent to fight on the front line.
