S&DR 200 at Locomotion, Shildon - 'Locomotion' No.1 & NER 901 Class 910 - 27/09/25
First is the original 'Locomotion' No.1, built for the Stockton & Darlington Railway. 'Locomotion' hauled the very first train over the S&D on 27th September 1825, then known as 'Active', with the weekend seeing the 1975 built replica of the engine re-running the modern day equivalent of the route from Shildon to Stockton. Little of the original locomotive today dates back to 1825, with 'Locomotion' having been rebuilt in 1828 following a boiler explosion, with a later restoration in 1857. This year saw 'Locomotion' on display at The Greatest Gathering in Derby, the first visit the engine has made outside the North East on England since 1890.
In the museum, 'Locomotion' sits alongside BR Class 43 HST 43102 'The Journey Shrinker', which holds the record for the fastest diesel locomotive in the world, at 148mph, with a little over 150 years separating the two locomotives.
Secondly, North Eastern Railway 901 Class 910 sits on display, having been cosmetically restored ahead of the 200 year celebrations. No.910 was built in 1875, and has previously partaken in the 50th (1875), 100th (1925) and 150th (1975) anniversary celebrations of the Stockton & Darlington Railway. On New Years Day of 2025, 910's whistle was blown outside the museum, as part of a international "Whistle-up" to celebrate the beginnings of Railway 200 celebrations. Prior to restoration and display at Shildon, No.910 was displayed at Kirkby Stephen East station on the Stainmore Railway, itself an extension of the S&DR, providing a through route between Darlington and Tebay.
