For some reason, most steam tours that run along the South London Line only do so heading east - and tend to return via the Herne Hill route instead. Happily, today's tour (from Peterborough to Canterbury and back) passed me here in Loughborough Junction in both directions - heading towards Canterbury in the morning, and returning in the dark later in the day. The loco has to work a bit harder when going west, to get up the gradient that leads out of Denmark Hill station and takes the line up onto the viaduct that takes it over the Thameslink line at Loughborough Junction.
