Two rail tours on the West Coast Main Line passed through Penrith within about 20 minutes of each other. The first was Saphos Trains' 'The Lakelander' (1Z18) from Crewe to Carlisle, hauled by a British Railways locomotive. A southbound Pendolino just cleared the station as the rail tour passed through at speed. Twenty minutes later, The Railway Touring Company's 'The Cumbrian Mountain Express' (1Z86) travelled en route from Euston to Carlisle.
