Last Days of Freight in Stoke-on-Trent
The rolling mill at the former Shelton Bar Steelworks had almost closed and much of the sprawling rail network there was dismantled or repurposed. Yet at Longport, the rails still carried life. Sidings still held aggregates, scrap metal, occasional steel shipments, and engineers’ trains hauling ballast and rail carriers. These flows too would soon fade but in the early years of 2000, the trackwork remained intact and in active use—a fleeting echo of Stoke-on-Trent’s industrial heartbeat.
