Trains at Penrith North Lakes, WCML, 08/04/2026

Description
A hot day at Penrith North Lakes on 8th April 2026.

Unfortunately this was just one of those days where everything went wrong.
My main intention was to see 70000 ‘Britannia’ on The Cumbrian Mountaineer tour from Crewe to Carlisle, and it was scheduled to stop here for water.
Shortly after I arrived at Penrith, I looked on the signal maps to keep an eye on Britannias progress, and I noticed that it had come to a stand in the loop at Oxenholme. I then checked Railcam to see if any notes had been put on, and sure enough it was confirmed that Britannia had failed and had to be removed from the tour.
37409 ‘Loch Awe’ was then dispatched from Carlisle Upperby to rescue the train from Oxenholme, which passed us at Penrith an hour late.
I was intending on catching the tour on its return journey, but I didn’t bother in the end and caught an earlier train back home.
It turned out to be a good decision to go home early, as 37409 failed on the return journey near Shap, blocking the WCML and resulting in delays and cancellations. Not a good day for LSL.
Aside from the 37, there wasn’t much action at Penrith apart from the usual passenger trains including one of Lumo’s Class 222s.
In all honesty I’m not too proud of this video and was thinking of just scrapping it, but then again it would be a waste. Hopefully you’ll enjoy what I salvaged.

Trains featured:

- Avanti West Coast Class 390 Pendolino’s
- TransPennine Express Class 397s & an 802
- Lumo Class 222
- LSL 37409 ‘Loch Awe’
