East Leake and the Gypsum Trade: Tracing a Century of Rail Transport
Freight trains historically transported gypsum to the British Gypsum works at East Leake, with raw material later arriving by ship at Middlesbrough before being moved by rail. In 2020, services were suspended due to unsafe line structures, including bridges, but repairs have since allowed heritage passenger services to resume on part of the route. The section is now operated as part of the Great Central Railway, with ongoing work to reconnect it to the southern portion at Loughborough. It remains unclear if freight trains will return in the future.
