Description
Today was quite a special day, as for the first time since September 2020, an LNER InterCity 225 set ran a passenger service north of York, going all the way from London Kings Cross to Newcastle, something which I have been waiting to see happen for a while now.
This was the 14:33 departure from London KX operating under the headcode 1N09 with 91114 ā€˜Durham Cathedral’ doing the honours along with set NL16 & DVT 82222.
Unsurprisingly, the train was packed with a mix of regular passengers and enthusiasts who had come out to see this. Members of the 225 Group and 225 Preservation were also on board for the occasion.
Even though I had to stand in the vestibule the whole way up north because of how busy it was, it was still a really smooth run up to Newcastle with some great views along the way, so I still really enjoyed it. It certainly makes a change being on a MK4 rather than an Azuma on this route as they are much comfier and smoother to ride despite how old they are.

I later travelled back to York on the return working to London, departing Newcastle at 18:27 as 1Y20. I upgraded to First Class for this part of the journey which made a big difference. The seats were comfortable, the service was excellent, and the staff were very friendly. I only recorded a few small clips for this section as I just wanted to enjoy the ride without filming.
From today, the 225s are expected to be a more regular sight in the North East with at least one set expected to go up there almost everyday.
