Southminster : Nuclear Flask Trains on the Crouch Valley Line
The existence of these freight movements even shaped the passenger service on the Crouch Valley branch. During the 1990s, for example, the working timetable deliberately omitted a down and up passenger train on Wednesday mornings, creating a path for the safe and unobstructed running of the nuclear flask trains.
The facility remained in use throughout both the active years of the Bradwell station and its subsequent decommissioning phase, with its final operation taking place on 31 August 2006.
A nuclear flask handling facility was established near Southminster station in 1962 to support the Bradwell nuclear power station. For over four decades, this site facilitated the rail transport of nuclear materials, including waste and spent fuel rods, destined for reprocessing and storage at Sellafield. These freight movements influenced local passenger services, with adjustments made to timetables to accommodate nuclear flask trains. The facility remained operational through both the active and decommissioning phases of Bradwell, with its final operation on 31 August 2006.
