Coal, Class 58s & Lost Lines – Thoresby Colliery to High Marnham, 1996
Filmed nearly two decades before Thoresby’s closure in 2015, this is a look at the everyday workings of coal freight trains in the 1990s. Today, the mine site has been redeveloped for housing, the power station demolished, and the Class 58s themselves withdrawn—making this footage a interesting snapshot of this type of British Rail freight operations in their final chapter.
The footage shows the locomotive arriving with empty wagons, running around its train, and heading to load coal at the colliery before proceeding eastwards towards High Marnham Power Station. Both the mine and power station have since been demolished, and the Class 58s withdrawn, making this an important historical record of freight operations during the final years of traditional coal transport in Britain.
