Freight Route in the Spotlight: When Passenger Trains Take the Back Way at Kingsbury
Although Kingsbury and Whitacre stations closed to passengers in 1968, the line itself remained open and continues to serve a strategic purpose. On this particular visit in 1995, the additional services led to inevitable congestion, as the diverted trains had to be carefully slotted in among the regular freight movements.
To this day some scheduled services still use this line as part of driver route retention.
This video explores a historic railway route between Kingsbury and Water Orton, originally part of the Birmingham & Derby Junction Railway. The line was modified in 1909 with a straighter cut-off to improve efficiency, bypassing a sharp curve at Whitacre. Although passenger services on this section ceased in 1968, the route remains operational for freight and some scheduled services. The footage captures the challenges of integrating diverted trains into regular freight movements, highlighting the ongoing strategic use of this historic line.
