Slam-Door EMUs & Class 73s around Southampton

Channel: John K Wells
Player
Description
A visit to Southampton - As the 1990s were drawing to a close, several filming visits were made to the Southern to capture the decline of slam-door EMUs as new units in the form of 'Wessex Electrics' were being ushered in replacing the former on many workings. The existance of slam doors continued until November 2005 and in the case of the Lymington Branch, 2010. Around the time of this film in 1998, class 73 hauled stock was still filling in awaiting the arrival of the new generation of EMUs and were seen working Bournemouth services.

The footage reflects a period when older stock was gradually being phased out, with some slam-door EMUs continuing in service until the early 2000s. The locations featured include Bournemouth, Millbrook, and Totton, with Southern and Network South East as the operators involved.
