Newark Flat Crossing – Britain’s Rare Mainline Rail Intersection
A first visit here in June 1992 captured everyday railway scenes of the time on video, followed by a return trip seven years later. By then, the Class 91 locomotives had subtly evolved in appearance, but much of the surrounding railway landscape remained unchanged.
This video captures the Newark Flat Crossing, a rare mainline rail intersection where the Nottingham–Lincoln Line crosses the East Coast Main Line at an angle of approximately 44 degrees. The site features eight interlocking crossings and has remained in its original form despite proposals for modernisation. Footage from visits in 1992 and 2000 shows the area’s enduring railway character, with only subtle changes in locomotive design over time. The location is associated with East Coast and Great North Eastern Railway operations, situated near Newark Northgate, Nottingham, and Lincoln.
