Boston Docks Rail Freight: Steel Traffic, Renewed Services and Swing-Bridge Operations in 1998
Freight trains continue to serve Boston Docks in the UK, primarily hauling steel coil, with the Victoria Group operating a daily service from the port to its West Midlands terminal. Rail freight gradually returned to the area after services resumed in 1997 following upgrades to track and loading facilities, and interest has since grown from other operators looking to use new or improved freight sites around Boston, including a rail-connected facility near Spalding Road. The footage shown here, filmed in October 1998, captures the distinctive swing-bridge operator’s frame and offers a brief glimpse into the shunting operations that once took place at the docks.
