Description
Michael Owen owned (in the care of the Class 20 Locomotive Society) Class 20 diesel-electric Bo-Bo locomotive number 20142 "Sir John Betjeman" was built in 1966 by English Electric at their Vulcan Foundry plant in Newton-le-Willows, originally entering traffic with British Railways as D8142. Powered by a single English Electric 8SVT eight-cylinder four-stroke turbocharged diesel engine producing 1,000 brake horsepower, this iconic "Chopper" is capable of a maximum speed of 75 mph and exerts a maximum starting tractive effort of 42,000 lbs. The locomotive looks immaculate carrying its unique corporate London Transport Lined Maroon livery, complete with authentic Metropolitan Railway crests. Named in honour of the legendary Poet Laureate and railway enthusiast Sir John Betjeman, this main-line registered locomotive is a highly celebrated member of the UK preservation scene.

Seen here in 8K 16:9 widescreen powering out of Highley station heading South, making plenty of noise as it generates its signature loud English Electric engine roar and heavy turbocharger whistle under hard acceleration, working a heritage passenger service from Bridgnorth to Kidderminster during the Severn Valley Railway Spring Diesel Gala on Saturday 16/05/2026 at 16:56.
