TWIN-MAYBACH ROAR! Class 52 Number D1015 Western Champion Roars Past at The SVR Spring Diesel Gala
The locomotive looks phenomenal carrying its iconic corporate BR Blue livery with full yellow ends, a scheme that perfectly captures the gritty, hard-working mainline aesthetic of the late 1960s and 1970s. As one of only seven surviving Class 52s, D1015 is fully mainline certified and famously retains its cast "Western Champion" nameplates, highly celebrated by enthusiasts for its distinct twin-engine roar and heritage design.
Attached to the rear of the train is Michael Owen's Class 20 diesel-electric locomotive number 20142 "Sir John Betjeman" (operated by the Class 20 Locomotive Society). This 1,000-brake-horsepower "Chopper" sports its unique London Transport Lined Maroon livery at the rear of the consist.
The train is captured passing through Country Park Halt (located just outside Highley) as D1015 throttles hard heading North toward Bridgnorth during the Severn Valley Railway Spring Diesel Gala on Saturday 16/05/2026 at 19:29.

A Class 52 diesel-hydraulic locomotive, D1015 "Western Champion," is shown in operation on the Severn Valley Railway. The locomotive, built in 1963 by British Railways at Swindon Works, features twin Bristol Siddeley Maybach engines and is one of only seven surviving examples of its class. It was captured during the Spring Diesel Gala event, running between Bridgnorth, Country Park Halt, Highley, and other locations along the line. The video highlights its powerful performance and distinctive BR Blue livery with yellow ends.
