Nuneaton Power Signal Box before closure

Channel: John K Wells
Player
Description
First opened in early October 1963, Nuneaton PSB was part of the extensive modernisation that took place in the early 1960s including electrification of the route from Euston as far as Liverpool and Manchester. It's initial extent of coverage was as far as the Brinklow area to the south and Atherstone northwards. The fringe boxes on other routes included Nuneaton Abbey Street on the Birmingham Line, Griff Junction towards Coventry and Nuneaton Midland Junction looking towards Leicester. One peculiarity became the fact that upon closure of Griff Junction, Nuneaton PSB then worked through to Hawkesbury Lane from 1983 reverting from 'track-circuit block' working to the older system of 'absolute-block' - Somewhat of a retrograde step some would argue though it seemed a more logical move as a 'temporary measure'. This then lasted throughout the remainder of the power box's life until its final closure in 2008 - 25 years!
