Step back to the final months of steam on Scotland's famous Aberdeen route as we journey from Glasgow Buchanan Street to Aberdeen during the summer of 1966.

Filmed just months before the closure of Glasgow Buchanan Street station and the withdrawal of the last steam-hauled Aberdeen expresses, this fascinating archive captures a railway world on the brink of change. Along the way we visit Stirling, Montrose, Dundee, Ferryhill and Aberdeen, witnessing a remarkable variety of locomotives including the legendary LNER A4s, Peppercorn A2s, V2s, A3s, Royal Scots and veteran J37s.

The film showcases the dramatic coastal scenery between Dundee and Aberdeen, the steep climbs at Carmont and Cove Bay, and the magnificent semaphore signalling that characterised Scottish railways during the final days of steam. We also look ahead to preservation, following the story of A4 Pacific 60009 Union of South Africa and its triumphant return to Aberdeen in 1990 during celebrations marking the centenary of the Forth Bridge.

This is a unique glimpse into a vanished railway era, capturing some of the very last steam workings in Scotland before diesel traction finally took over.
