BR Class 55 'Deltic' Locomotives in Preservation during the Pre-Digital Age
(1987 - 1999)
Volume BR55-01P
Another feature in this newer series of Vintage Traction from the pre digital era, from the mid 1980's to the turn of the millenium, when the digital age started to put an end to analogue video...
This feature focuses on the Preservation scene and features the English Electric Type 5 Class 55 'Deltic' Locomotive. Two experimental Locomotives were built, DP1 and DP2 in 1955, prior to the Locomotives that were to follow in the early 1960s. DP1 was withdrawn in 1960 and went to the Science Museum for 30 years and has now been stored in Shildon since October 2015. These were built at Vulcan Foundry in Newton-Le-Willows between 1961 - 1962, with two 18 cylinder Napier Engines, producing a total horse power of 3,300 HP, fitted with English Electric 538 Traction Motors. 22 of these magnificent Locomotives were built to replace the A4 Pacific Steam Engines on the ECML to run between London and Edinburgh and other express services. They ended their careers mainly on 'The Hull Executive' between King's Cross and Hull and were withdrawn 1982 to a massive band farewell at King's Cross Station to a Tumultuous gathering of well wishers. Out of the 22 luckily 7 were saved and are in preservation still today, even some have been utilised by 'Virgin' Trains on BR mainline for Cross Country services in the 1990s.
This feature covers the period from around 1987 to 1999 and the scenes were captured on various private railways during this period. The last section features the class on the mainline in the late 1990's. I do hope you enjoy the feature and please comment and like, if you feel the video was of some enjoyment and nostalgia to watch.. (For Pip)
